The holiday season is right around the corner. Although this year has been a challenge for many families, this time of year is a great chance to find a way to make your holiday traditions happen in a way that is safe and fun. In Grand Haven, holiday events are adjusting with the times, but are still planned to go ahead in order to bring residents some extra holiday cheer this year.
The two major Grand Haven events scheduled for 2020 are Grand Haven Light Night and the Grand Haven Jingle Bell Parade.
Light Night is one of the most popular Grand Haven events during the holiday season. This year, the annual tradition is happening the weekend of Friday, November 20th through Sunday, November 22nd. Along the main street in downtown Grand Haven, vendors decorate storefront displays in preparation for the holiday shoppers that roll into town for the weekend. There are holiday tunes playing courtesy of WHGN, hot drinks like cider and cocoa, and plenty of treats to snack on while you peruse local goods for your holiday shopping list. Many shops are even offering special promotions during the event.
This family-friendly event is promoting social distancing and encouraging visitors to bundle up with gloves, scarves, and a facemask. Come out to Washington Avenue in Grand Haven to see the lights, enjoy some treats, and celebrate the holiday season on the West Michigan lakeshore.
To keep all families safe this holiday season, the annual Jingle Bell Parade will instead be Santa’s Cruise. This year, Santa will be touring around town with all your favorite characters. You can watch the holiday procession go by your home or find a spot to wave to Mr. and Mrs. Claus from your vehicle.
Santa’s Cruise will take place in the evening on December 5th. The procession will follow a predetermined 12-mile route through town, beginning at White Pines Middle School and ending at Robbins Road. Although like other 2020 Grand Haven events, this year’s will look a little different, Santa is still determined to visit North Ottawa County and greet residents and wish them a joy-filled holiday.
If you’re out visiting the lakeshore, there are more holiday events near Grand Haven in Coopersville and Spring Lake to check out with your family.
The Santa Train in Coopersville runs Saturdays and Sundays in November and December. Take a round-trip in a vintage train car from Coopersville to Marne. On your 90-minute adventure, you can visit with Santa and receive a gift, listen to a reading of The Polar Express, and see the lights set up around town. This year Santa is taking extra care to make sure everyone stays healthy and only allowing 50 percent capacity in each train car.
Starting November 27th, downtown Spring Lake will be draped in a colorful and very, very bright light display made of more than 120,000 LED lights. The event will have music and food, as well as kids’ activities including a Polar Express Train, crafts, and more. There will also be various places to donate non-perishable food items and clothing to The People’s Center in Spring Lake. Come out with a giving spirit and help all enjoy their 2020 holiday season.
